September 2018  |  Vol. 10, #8

Dear colleagues,

We are pleased to share the 2017 annual report for the Society of Family Planning (SFP) and the SFP Research Fund. This was a year when science served as a flash point in debates about abortion and contraception care and policy, and when activists working to restrict abortion and contraception continued to use biased science to push their goals forward.

In this climate, we were proud to reaffirm our ongoing commitment to rigorous and impactful scientific inquiry focused on abortion and contraception. In 2017, we served as an academic community, a convener, a producer of clinical guidelines, and a grantmaker. We also examined how the field of abortion and contraception research has changed over the last decade, and how we needed to change to respond to the clear and emergent needs of the field. We worked to complete our first-ever strategic plan and committed ourselves to the challenging work of continuously reviewing and learning from both our failures and our successes. We hope the result is an organization ready to stretch and better poised to take on the difficult work of ensuring that science helps to inform abortion and contraception practice and policy.

This work was made possible by our members, grantees, partners in advocacy and policy, and our funder. On behalf of the board of directors and staff, we look forward to continuing to work alongside you this year and in the future.
