Mark D. Nichols, MD

Mark D. Nichols, MDMark D. Nichols, MD received his medical degree from the University of California at Davis, and completed his residency training in Obstetrics & Gynecology at Oregon Health and Sciences University (OHSU) in 1983. Working at the Margaret Pyke Center in London, he completed a fellowship in Obstetrics and Gynecology Research at University College London in 1990.

After Dr. Nichols completed his residency, the chair of the Ob/Gyn department at OHSU, Dr. Leon Speroff, invited him to join the faculty, where he has served ever since. Dr. Nichols served as the Ob/Gyn residency program director for 12 years and as the Chief of the Division of General Gynecology and Obstetrics at OHSU for 25 years. In 2001, he started the Family Planning Fellowship at OHSU. Dr. Nichols also served as the Medical Director of Planned Parenthood of the Columbia/Willamette (PPCW) for 19 years.

Dr. Nichols specializes in family planning, alternatives to hysterectomy, laparoscopic surgery and obstetrics. His research focuses on contraception and abortion and medical education. He was the local principal investigator in the initial Population Council trial investigating mifepristone for first trimester abortion leading to FDA approval. At PPCW, he directed the first provision of mifepristone in Oregon and the first Essure services through Planned Parenthood in the country.

Dr. Nichols was a founding member of SFP and served as President of the SFP Board of Directors from 2009 to 2011. He was also a member of the National Medical Committee of the Planned Parenthood Federation of America from 1996 to 2002. Internationally, Dr. Nichols has worked with several NGOs in family planning programs and most recently served as a visiting professor in the Ob/Gyn department at Mekelle University, Ethiopia.

Dr. Nichols is currently Professor in Ob/Gyn at OHSU, and has recently semi-retired. He continues to teach and mentor medical students, residents and fellows.
