Developing a curriculum in adolescent family planning and reproductive health

Project abstract

I propose to create a curriculum for adolescent medicine fellows to improve family planning and reproductive health service delivery and knowledge, and to enhance the reproductive health competence of future adolescent medicine physicians.

There is currently no consistent curriculum for reproductive health or family planning training across adolescent medicine fellowships, although physicians spend half their time providing reproductive health. A recent needs assessment I conducted with adolescent medicine program directors and fellows identified gaps in family planning and reproductive health knowledge, practice, and training, and disparities between perceived training offered and reported training received during fellowship. The majority of fellowship program directors expressed extreme interest in offering further family planning training opportunities to their fellows.

The curriculum will be structured on the GNOME model (Goals, Needs, Objectives, Methods, Evaluation), with learning experiences organized around educational objectives and guided by needs assessment data. The curriculum will contain didactic, interactive, and experiential components based on evidence-based literature and best clinical practices. This curriculum will undergo expert review by at least eleven adolescent medicine fellowship program directors to guide content development and determine feasibility and acceptance.

The full curriculum will be piloted with adolescent medicine fellows at University of Rochester Medical Center, with didactic/interactive components piloted live with pediatric residents and general academic pediatric fellows at the University of Rochester, and online with at least twenty-six adolescent medicine fellows from across the country. Post-implementation evaluation will be structured on Kirkpatrick’s model of training program evaluation.

After pilot testing and curriculum refinement, materials and evaluation data will be disseminated to all adolescent medicine fellowship programs via a curriculum website and through workshops at national meetings
