David Grimes, MD

Recipient, SFP 2005 Lifetime Achievement Award

David Grimes, MDDr. Grimes is a clinical professor of obstetrics and gynecology and a fellow at the Cecil G. Sheps Center for Health Services Research at UNC. He is also vice president for biomedical affairs at FHI in Research Triangle Park, NC, where his research interests focus on assessment of contraceptive technologies, sexually transmitted infections, and clinical epidemiology.

Dr. Grimes has had a dual career in clinical obstetrics/gynecology and preventive medicine for the past three decades. He served as an epidemiologist at the Centers for Disease Control, and has been a faculty member in four medical schools: Emory University; the University of Southern California; University of California-San Francisco; and UNC-Chapel Hill. He has published over 300 peer-reviewed articles, 40 textbook chapters and nine books.

In addition, Dr. Grimes has taught research methods to physicians and scientists in the United States, Kenya, Ethiopia, India, Egypt and Bangladesh. He is the recipient of numerous teaching awards and honors, and has served on the editorial and advisory boards of peer-reviewed journals including The Lancet, Obstetrics and Gynecology, and Contraception. He is one of a small number of physicians in the United States that is board-certified in both obstetrics and gynecology and preventive medicine.
