Dear SFP fellows and colleagues,

I am delighted to inform you that the SFP board of directors has established a new award to honor mentors in the field of family planning. Dr. Robert A. Hatcher, who has devoted much of his career to mentoring others, will be the first recipient of this annual award, and the award will be named in his honor—the Robert A. Hatcher Family Planning Mentor Award.

Dr. Hatcher joined the faculty of Emory University in 1968 and remained there until his recent retirement. During that time, he started Contraceptive Technology, originally the notes for his lectures to medical students, and now the leading reference in reproductive health, with over 2 million copies in print. He also started the annual Contraceptive Technology conferences, now held three times a year with roughly 2,000 attendees per year. Read more about Dr. Hatcher’s work on our website.

While the new award does not carry a lectureship, we hope you will join us in honoring Bob—as well as Carole Joffe and Paul Blumenthal, whose awards I wrote you about last week—at the SFP awards luncheon, scheduled for October 7, the second day of the North American Forum on Family Planning in Seattle.

I’m looking forward to seeing all of you there!

With warm regards,
