Senior Research Project Professional, Section of Family Planning & Contraceptive Research, Department of Obstetrics & Gynecology, University of Chicago

General summary: The Senior Research Project Professional support research in three cross-cutting program areas relating to family planning: Adolescent reproductive health (contraception, pregnancy, sexuality, new media); Abortion (women's decision making, clinical care and affects of policy on adolescents and low income women) and safe motherhood (family planning, postpartum maternal hemorrhage, postpartum contraception, and sexually transmitted infection, birth spacing). This position will actively facilitate the design, development and execution of qualitative and quantitative research projects. Apply skills and expertise to contribute high-level background research, writing and data analysis to advance the development of projects from design through publication phases. Provide leadership in research efforts and pursuing funding opportunities. Contribute to and prepare presentations, media, and curricular materials relating to the research projects. Supervise research team on a day-to-day basis. Lead policy analysis and produce the statistical section of federally funded grants. Design work assignments and oversee progress of studies. Handle highly sensitive information and maintain strict confidentiality.
Reports to: Research Manager
Essential functions:
- 40%—Write and edit manuscripts for publication and develop presentations related to quantitative and/or qualitative research
- 20%—provide leadership in the conduct of studies with the goal of achieving the specific aims and scope of work in several projects simultaneously
- 10%—Support the Section Chief in the development of research grants including proposal writing, development of statistical sections
- 20%—Collect data for government and foundation research projects conducted by Principal Investigators using techniques that may include surveys, in-depth qualitative interviews, and focus groups. Incumbent is responsible for assisting in the development of these methods and coordination of the data collection
- 10%—Build and manage large datasets; conduct statistical programming and analysis using SAS, STATA, Atlas Ti or other software of all qualitative research conducted by PI
Qualifications:
- Master's degree or higher in a field of study relevant to the research being conducted (e.g., Public Health, Health Studies, epidemiology, Social Work, Sociology, Psychology, Anthropology or related field) required, PhD preferred
- Three years of experience in field relevant to the research being conducted preferred
- Post-graduate experience with quantitative research methods required
- Strong biostatistical skills including excellent quantitative skills and experience required (e.g., SAS or STATA)
- Experience with collecting and analyzing qualitative data required
- Experience with grant writing required
- Excellent interpersonal skills
- Ability to work independently, work on multiple studies simultaneously and self motivate required
- Demonstrated proficiency in academic writing required and some history of publication-writing and development
- Ability to handle and relate sensitive information and work with minimal supervision required
- Excellent organizational, verbal and written skills required
- Fluency in Spanish preferred
Physical demands:
- Must be able to speak clearly
- Must be capable of working on the computer for long stretches of time
- On occasion will need to lift objects and travel around campus
Mental demands:
- Must be able relay information clearly and concisely
- Must be able to decipher and implement research protocol
- Must be able to quickly determine verbal inquiries in order to elicit necessary information
